The Eternal Twist

Abstracts are such a personal journey for the creator and for the viewer. This painting is a personal journey spanning the year 2020. What a tumultuous and emotional one it turned out to be! When I create an abstract, I start the painting with only the bare minimum of ideas on what it’s going to be, because I like to experience how it will grow and become and I don’t want to get in its way with too many requirements. This one was no different in that regard but what was different was that I took a year to complete it and I was able to put this bizarre, painful, hopeful and heart-wrenching year into it. I named it The Eternal Twist. Now that you see it, what are the thoughts you have? I will tell you mine but I urge you to take a moment to be with it before you read on.

I feel like the last year has been akin to riding a rollercoaster that goes in and out of a hurricane. The changes have been abrupt and for many catastrophic. I have endeavoured to paint the love, pain, hope, despair, strength and fragility I have felt and witnessed into this piece. The last year has driven home that even relative peacefulness is not a guarantee, in fact, order and chaos constantly switch places. That feeling of being caught up in someone else’s dance is The Eternal Twist.
